Rock the North Benefit Jam

According to the most recent posted schedule (still subject to revision) for the Rock the North Benefit Jam, we’ll be the last act, right before Melanie’s closing comments. We’re scheduled to play from 8:15 – 9 pm on Sunday, May 19.

Really looking forward to this. It’s a really good cause and it’s our first home town performance in a long, long time.

Spring and Summer 2013

Here’s what we’ve got scheduled so far for the next few months:

Rock the North Benefit Jam at ‘Ksan on the third weekend of May.

Relay for Life cancer benefit in Smithers on June 8.

Smithers Street Fair on June 15.

Smithers Midsummer Music Festival the first weekend of July.

Kispiox Valley Music Festival the last weekend of July.

A dance for Smithers Homecoming Week on August 4 at the fair grounds in Smithers.

Tentatively scheduled: a private event for August 16 in Burns Lake.

Note: Steve won’t be around for Kispiox or for August 4 so Karl Wyssen will be filling in on bass. Also, Heather may or may not be around for those gigs but we’ll figure out something if she’s not.

Schnai Dai was a Blast

Schnai Dai was a blast. It’s always fun to see people moving chairs and tables out of the way to clear space to dance – and they danced right to the end, including two extra songs to placate those who still hadn’t had quite enough after five hours.

Perhaps it was a case of people really wanting to hear a certain kind of music, which turned out to mostly be what we’d prepared. Perhaps it was the blowing off of a full ski season’s worth of steam. Hell, they even danced to one of our original tunes (“Shopping Blues”) which I don’t expect many of them had heard before.

It’s still winter up on the mountain but the warm response (and wild antics) from staff and customers alike made for a helluva night. People kept thanking us. Well, we loved having such an appreciative crowd. So, thank you.

Axes of Ego does Schnai Dai at Hudson Bay Mountain

We’re playing Schnai Dai at the Hudson Bay Mountain Resort on April 14, 2013. This is their annual end-of-ski-season party and we’re looking forward to rockin’ the place. From what I’ve heard, it’s a fun party – especially with a good, rockin’ band!

Congrats to The Racket

Congratulations to The Racket! These three talented, passionate, dedicated guys have made it to the top three in the BC’s Best Teen Band Contest 2013 on youthink.ca.

They got into the top 10 on the strength of the demo they submitted. They got into the top 3 on the strength of community support via voting. The other two in the top 3 are from BC’s Lower Mainland while The Racket are from South Hazelton, the Kispiox Valley, and Smithers — a collection of small communities in northern BC.

The next step is a battle of the bands. The Racket has something strong and unique and I think they’ve got a good chance to win this thing. However, whether they finish first, second, or third in this competition, I think they’ve got a great future in music as long as they decide to go for it and keep going for the dream.

Houston rocks!

Last weekend, we played a dance for the Houston Oldtimers Hockey tournament in Houston, BC, hosted by the Houston Beer Pigs, and it was probably our best gig yet. What made the difference was the audience: they were there to have a good time and they didn’t need two or three sets to start getting into the mood to dance. No, these folks were up on the dance floor almost right from the start of the first set and they didn’t quit. That makes it more fun for us, which makes for a better show, which means more fun for the crowd, which makes it more fun for us…

The Houston Community Hall is quite good, too. It seems to have been built with some acoustic considerations in mind and the stage isn’t too small. Some halls are deep and narrow but this one is not too deep and it’s nice and wide. I think that makes for a better dance floor dynamic and you can see more of what’s going on when you’re on the stage.

Would we play there again? You bet!

Kickin’ Ass

Steve took a call from someone looking to book us for a dance. “I hear you guys kick ass”, she said. “Yes we do”, said Steve. Nice to see that the word is starting to get around after only six years. That’s actually pretty quick.
